Teaching is the highest form of understanding
This is my favourite quotation about teaching and it is so true. Until you set about teaching something, you never really know if you have understood it properly. It came home to me when I first had to teach children about the concept of ‘the mole’ in chemistry. I could do mole calculations and get the right answer, but turning the concept into words that a 15 year old could understand was not easy – I made a right mess of it as a new teacher – it was at that point I realised what ‘understanding’ something was all about.
